How to Prepare Your Property for Dumpster Delivery in Rhode Island
A little preparation before your dumpster arrives makes delivery faster and avoids common delays. Here’s exactly what to check at your Rhode Island property before our truck shows up.
Clear the Delivery Path
Our truck needs approximately 60 feet of straight, clear access to back the container into place, and about 23 feet of vertical clearance for the hydraulic lift arm. Move parked cars out of the driveway, trim any low-hanging tree branches along the path, and clear basketball hoops or other obstacles that might be in the way. If your property has a shared driveway or tight access from the street, mention this when you book so we can plan accordingly.
Decide on Placement Before We Arrive
Know exactly where you want the container before delivery day. Common placement spots in Rhode Island include the side of a driveway near the garage, a flat section of yard close to the work area, or, when private property access is not available, the street (which may require a permit — see our permit guide by city). Mark the spot with cones, chalk, or simply be ready to point it out when our driver arrives.
Check for Overhead and Underground Obstacles
- Overhead wires — common in older Rhode Island neighborhoods, especially around Federal Hill in Providence and similar dense areas. Our truck’s lift arm needs clearance to raise the container.
- Tree branches — low branches along the driveway or over the intended placement spot should be trimmed back before delivery.
- Underground sprinkler systems — if you have an irrigation system, let us know the placement area so we can avoid putting the container’s full weight directly on sprinkler heads or shallow lines.
- Septic systems — for properties on septic rather than city sewer, confirm the tank and leach field location so the container isn’t placed directly on top of it.
Check With Your HOA if Applicable
Some Rhode Island condominium associations and planned communities have rules about dumpster placement, duration, or visibility from the street. If you live in an HOA community, check your community guidelines before booking to avoid any conflict during your rental period.
Protect Your Driveway Surface
You do not need to do anything here yourself; we place protective boards under every container on paved surfaces at no extra charge. See our full driveway protection process for details on how this works.
Let Neighbors Know if Placing on the Street
If your container will sit on a public street, especially in dense Providence or Pawtucket neighborhoods, a quick heads-up to neighbors can prevent confusion and reduce the chance of someone assuming the container is for public use. Keeping the rental period as short as possible also helps.

Property Preparation FAQ
Do I need to be present for the property to be ready?
No, but the path and placement area need to be clear whether or not you are there. If you cannot be present, give us clear instructions over the phone about where to place the container.
What if I forget to clear the path before delivery?
Our driver will do their best to work with the space available, but an obstructed path may require rescheduling if the truck genuinely cannot access the property safely. Clearing the path in advance avoids this entirely.
Can you deliver to a shared or narrow driveway?
Often yes, but tell us about tight access when you book so we can plan the approach and confirm it will work before the truck arrives at your Rhode Island property.
